HAZEL NICHOLLS - PORTRAITS
These 'Secret Garden' portrait commissions 2022-23 seek to create the character and personality of the subject...set in a garden. They are inspired both by the novel and the song by Bruce Springsteen. |

Inspired by " Quiet" by Susan Cain, my series of five portraits express the personality and body language of Introverts, Ambiverts and Extroverts through an expressionist style. I portray the complexity of personality with colour, posture (broad-open, closed-withdrawn), eye contact (direct or non direct, short or long) and facial expression. One personality type is not superior to another. All are valued and contribute to the arts and society. |

This is a painting of my dog Ebony completed as a part of my final piece for the Final Major Project during lockdown. This outcome was completed in acrylic paint with pastels for the finishing touch. It was inspired by the artist James Bartholemew who I discovered in a magazine at home which advertised his dog portraits. I loved his style and I was truely inspired and fell in love with his expressionist but yet realistic style. The painting expresses yet again my love for painting dogs, part |
Three LurchersThis study was my first outcome during lockdown. At the start of lockdown I felt very unmotivated and anxious but was driven by what I love - nature - and four legged friends. I found the photograph in a magazine and felt inspired to spend as many hours as it would take to create a high standard outcome. I created this study using pastels and charcoal. |
